Our Mission

The Fulcrum exists to support and launch New York based playwrights-of-color.

We create a space for playwrights to develop new work on their own terms, we foster solidarity and community between playwrights by turning them into collaborators, we place the playwright at the center of the company’s decision-making process and we produce new plays in top-notch productions.

The Fulcrum and its supporters are guided by the following principles:

We believe that theater should reflect the demographics of the city we live in.

We believe exciting playwrights deserve great productions.

We believe funding should be spent on productions of new plays.

We seek long-term collaborations that last over the course of various projects. We believe the best theater is created among collaborators who live and work close to each other.

We believe that new play development isn’t really development unless it arrives someplace. Our development efforts end in productions.

We believe that development processes should be as carefully and idiosyncratically designed as the plays they seek to support. We work closely with our playwrights to ensure that our development processes are tailored to the specific needs of each project.

We believe that theater artists work best not when they are competing against each other, but when they are striving to help each other succeed.

We believe in work that illuminates the mystery of the world and reframes conventional ways of seeing. We believe in boldness, in risk taking. We believe the impossible can be achieved on stage. We believe quality is achieved not through large budgets, but through imagination and will.
